Negombo
A characteristic fishing town north of Colombo, it is a mere 6 km from the international airport. Set amidst lush groves of coconut palms, it breathes the spirit of the sea. Negombo is a gourmet’s paradise with sea food in plenty. Old - world fishing craft, like the outrigger canoe and the catamaran, bring seer, skipjack, herring, mullet, pomfret and amber jack, while lobster and prawn are caught in the lagoon .
Beruwela
South of Colombo, Beruwela marks the beginning of a 130 km-stretch of beaches, where resort development has made immense strides in recent years. Good bathing in the bay all year round.
Coral reef off Hikkaduwa attract snorkellers and scuba divers, while several turtle hatcheries give visitors the chance to see efforts to conserve endangered sea turtles

Western and South-western Beaches - The best West coast beaches are at Negombo, Waikkal, Seeduwa, Hendala, Uswetakeiyawa and Marawila, located north of and close to the commercial capital Colombo and to the International Airport. Picturesque fishing villages with catamaran out-rigger canoes and mangrove- hung lagoons add character and charm to palm-fringed golden sands. South of Colombo, South-Western beaches include Mt.Lavinia, Wadduwa, Kaluthara and Beruwala. |

Southern Beaches -The prime beach resort of the South are Bentota, Induruwa, Kosgoda, Ahungalla, Hikkaduwa, Galle, Unawatuna, Koggala, Weligama, Dikwella, Tangalle and Hambantota. Here soft, golden, palm-fringed sands, tiny tranquil bays, forest of coloured coral and perennial sunshine will enchant beach-lovers.

Eastern and Northern Beaches - Here too Sri Lanka has fine beaches, typically wide stretches of sand and what seems like miles of clear, shallow water; pretty bays and coves, deep natural harbours, and still lagoons, under water coral gardens…… and a good, long sunshine-filled season from February to mid October. The best beaches are those of Nilaveli, Kuchchaveli, Marble bay, Sweet bay and Dead Man’s Cove, north of Trincomalee town with its magnificent, finest natural harbour in the world. Go south and you will find peaceful beaches of Passekudah, Kalkudah and Arugam Bay. |
